Morocco, Hamam and relaxation

When I was in Morocco the other day, I was happy to read "Massage", "Spa" or "Hamam" on the street. A varied and affordable offer is waiting for wellness hungry people, not quite on the scale of Bangkok but omnipresent. Indeed, various Arab countries have a long Hamam tradition. A hamam is actually a steam bath where you can wash (or have yourself washed) and also indulge in personal hygiene. It is visited by women and men.

The hamam tradition is not practiced everywhere as loosely as in the big cities of Morocco. Especially with foreigners it is almost normal that a man is washed by a woman. While the man is completely naked in the washing room, the woman keeps her loose clothing on. It is then also not usual that it comes to an erotic exchange although this is not excluded depending on the establishment.

The same philosophy also applies to the numerous massage salons. One should therefore not go in with the expectation that a sensual experience will occur, much less explicitly demand one. There is the unwritten rule that if you yourself or the masseuse does not use a towel to cover your body, it is possible that a "finalisation" - i.e. a fine massage - is desired or possible. But no rule without exceptions: In the eight different massages I have had only one more, despite the towel. So you can see here about the quota, if you just follow the signs. But those who want to proceed a little more purposefully will find different tips from addresses in the net. I can recommend to book in each case the "Massage Relaxante". It is very pleasant, as one rather works with caressing movements. Massages are also often offered in the Hamams. So it is a good idea to go to a hamam for 2-3 hours and let yourself be pampered.
